Here is a very handsome man in an appealing full package: ripple frame with dry finish, églomisé verre glass mat, and striking blue background that accents the gent’s good looks. The profile is painted in watercolor on a card that has been cut to fit the oval portal of the reverse painted glass. The gent might have started life in a papier maché frame with an oval opening. The églomisé has been overpainted and sealed on the reverse to hold the black color but it appears to be period églomisé. A pencil inscription on the reverse of the card says “No 38 Pall [Paul?] Good [Sood]”. The inscription may be period—it is impossible to date pencil but the flowery script looks like it is possibly 19th century.
A great overall little package! Circa 1820.
