Small oval pantry box with opposing finger-laps. It is painted black or very dark navy with gold stenciled design on top and faintly around the upper edge. Constructed with irregular, round tacks and pegs, it is later 19th to early 20th century. The black paint is later than the box – there is a sliver of wood loss at the very top edge of the side (the side of the box bottom). The loss of wood is completely covered by the top—but the area of loss shows that the black paint came after the wood loss because it covered that edge. The stenciled decoration and black paint is likely 1970s era. The inside of the box has a later (fairly modern) teal paint. This sweet little box measures 4.25" x 3" x 2" tall.
It stacks very nicely on top of another small box with grain painting that we offer in another listing. The last photos shows the two little boxes stacked.
