Antique Pen Wiper of Lion
  • A funny little manufactured penwipe of a lion with glass eyea. I think these are called “flatties”. At least that’s what my late friend, Anita Swatkovsky, used to call them. The top is of thick velveteen which has been pressed to show the design of our King of the Jungle reclining with his tail wrapped around himself. His mane, back and haunch is shaded brown while his body is a great gold-ochre. The velveteen front piece is glued to the first leaf of wool felt. The back is glazed paper, glued to the last leaf of wool felt. There are 4 wool leaves total, including the two glued to the front and back. He measures 4” x 2 ½” and is in unused condition. There is a little moth damage on the blue leaf. I estimate the age to be the first few years of the 20th century.
