Stunning Antique Bandbox (aka Wallpaper Box)
  • Here is a mid-sized bandbox with really creative use of wallpaper. The background azure color is very striking and somewhat architectural pattern elements are in a great contrast of white and brown tones. The bottom edge design reminds me of upside-down dentil molding and the design above it is reminiscent of carved wood accents found in fireplace mantles and the like. Each part of the box has its own design. The wallpaper inside of the lid is predominately white with gold cloud-like design. Inside the body of the box is a boldly decorated wallpaper with architectural design elements and a grape bunch in bold tones of brown. The edge of the box lid is the same wallpaper as the sides and top but placed with a concentration of circular elements of that particular wallpaper. Even the bottom of the box is edged with azure paper with shaded circular elements. The box is of stitched pastement construction. It measures 12" x 7 ½” deep x 5 ¾” tall. Very good condition with expected scuffing and paper losses especially at edges and where top fits tightly down onto body. American, Circa 1850.
