Antique Leather Covered Fragment Mirror
  • This is a wonderful leather encased mirror. We think of fragment mirrors of having wood frames but this is likely also a fragment mirror. The leather opening is in the shape of a shield. You can feel how the early mirror is quite thick so that the leather frame seems to bulge until it makes up to just below the arched crest which has a hole for hanging. The leather is handsewn, likely done by a harness-maker or cobbler. The leather has darkened from age and handling. The richly grained back has not achieved the same deep color as the front. 5 ½” x 4” x ~1/2” thick. Circa first half of the 19th century.
